Soccer wins to advance to Great South Semifinals

stephkicks November 01, 2011: The Salem College soccer team defeated Huntingdon College today 1-0 to advance to the Great South Athletic Conference semifinals on Friday. Stephanie Hubbard (Sanford, NC) scored in the 20th minute to secure the win. Salem improves to 11-4-2 overall with the victory.

The Spirits got off to a quick start and were finally able to score when Hubbard headed home a direct kick by Anna Trakas (Tryon, NC). Salem would continue to control the game for the final 70 minutes.

Salem out shot the Hawks 25-3. Jenny Burnash made several key saves to keep Huntingdon in the game. Taylor Barcom (Anchorage, AK) got the shutout for the Spirits and made 3 saves. The Spirits also had a 6-0 corner kick advantage.

The Great South semifinals and championship game will be hosted by LaGrange College in Georgia. Salem will play in the 2nd semifinal on Friday at 1:45 pm against Piedmont College. The soccer team has now reached the semifinals in each of their 3 years in the Great South, but they have not reached the championship game.
