Shamrock Mills With Newest Historic Marker

On September 26, 2010, the Historic Resources Commission held an unveiling ceremony for the newest City of Winston-Salem historic marker. Recognizing Shamrock Mills (the Sawtooth Building), the marker brings the total number of historic markers for the City’s Historic Marker program to 21!

In 1911, Shamrock Knitting Mills was the first structure built by the Hanes Hosiery empire. The building’s sawtooth roof is noteworthy in the development of industrial architecture. This significant structure
recalls the early history of one of the largest hosiery manufacturers in the world.
