Umoja: African art, jewelry, and clothing

Downtown Winston-Salem has a new addition, Umoja, a non-profit store specializing in African art, jewelry, and clothing. Umoja is a project of the Sister2Sister International Outreach Ministry Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Sister2Sister was founded in 2010 by Purity Ruchugo, a native of Nairobi, Kenya that has called Winston-Salem home for over 20 years. The organization’s goal is to bring wholeness into the lives of broken women from all walks of life and transform them into confident women of virtue and purpose.

The majority of the items sold in Umoja are made by women in Kenya working with the Sister2Sister program. The organization is registered with the Fair Trade Federation which ensures that the artisans working with Sister2Sister and the Umoja project are paid fair wages.

Proceeds from Umoja go towards supporting an orphan lunch program in Kenya, entrepreneurship training for women, and assisting the mothers of special needs children. In addition to its efforts overseas, Umoja also has an in-store skill training program for local women.

My daughter and I had the pleasure of not only to visit this beautiful and authentic establishment but we also had the pleasure of being in the company of the owner, Purity. Her spirit is all around this place making the shopping as beautiful as her products. Each time I visit the area, I will be sure to visit her place. I will never hesitate to invest financially, the investment is more meaningful than anything.
